A few of the most impressive castles in Italy




Castel Sant'Angelo, Rome
Dating back to the Roman time, this building was initially commissioned by emperor Hadrian as a family mausoleum. It was then transformed into a castle by the popes of the nearby Vatican state and it was also used as a prison. The castle is overlooking the beautiful Tevere river, with its amazing Roman bridges, and from the top of the terrace it is possible to have a stunning view over the entire city of Rome.

Castel dell'Ovo, Naples
Built by the Normans during the 11th century is one of the most picturesque Italian castle. It was erected over the remains of the Roman time Lucullo villa and it was named Egg Castle because according to the legend, the famous poet Virgil buried a magic egg under the foundation of Lucullo's villa. Looking like a small medieval village the castle has a very beautiful terrace from which it is possible to have a breathtaking view over the entire bay of Naples with Mount Vesuvius and the Sorrento Peninsula in the background.

Castel Sant'Elmo, Naples
The castle was built by the architect Tino di Camaino during the Angevine time over the hilltop dominating the bay of Naples. Its structure is particularly beautiful as it was constructed in the shape of a six pointed star fortress. From its terraces views span to the Sorrento peninsula in the south, to the Vesuvius and the Appennines and the plane all around it and to the three islands of the gulf of Naples in the west.

Angevine Castle, Naples
This gothic castle was built by Charles I of the Angevine dinasty, during the therteenth century as a fortress to host the king who decided to move the capital of the Kingdom of Sicily to Naples, giving birth to the Kingdom of Naples. With its towers in piperno stone and one in tufa stone, the castle is well known all over the world for its marvellous  marbleTriumphal Arch, dating back to the Aragonese age, which is considered to be a masterpiece of the Reinessance.

Caccamo Castle, Sicily
Located on a hilltop, at the height of 521 meters, Caccamo castle dates back to the Norman time and it is still well preserved. It is overlooking the San Leonardo river valley and from its terraces the view is astonishing as it spans to the artifical Rosamarina lake and the hills surrounding the area.

Lettere Castle, Campania
The Lettere castle, which has recently been restaured, is among the most beautiful castles as it is located over a mountain overlooking the plane around Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples. From its terraces the view is really stunning and breathtaking.

Bagnoregio, Lazio

Linked to the mainland by a 1 kilometer long bridge, the Castle is located on a rock in the middle of a valley and from the top of its terraces it is possible to see both the Lazio region  and the Umbria region, as it is placed right on the border between those two amazing districts.

The castle of Monteriggioni is placed on a hilltop surrounded by green valleys. Dating back to the thirteenth century, it still conserves intact its nature as a small fortified burg which was used to contrast the powerful Florence during the centuries.

Doge's Palace, Venice
The Doge's Palace in Venice is a buitiful building which was constructed in a typical Venetian Gothic architecture and was embellished in Byzantine and Moorish style. The castle which hosted the Doge during the Marine Republic of Venice, is nowadays used as a museum.

Castel del Monte, Andria, Apulia
Castel del Monte is an amazing Swabian castle built on a rocky hill at a height of 540 meters above the sea level in Apulia. The castle has got an octagonal shape and was established by Frederik II of Hofenstaufen in 1240 in an area known as Capitanata. Frederik II was a man of extraordinary culture and he was known as Stupor Mundi. He loved art and architecture and the castle was built as a symbol of his enlightenment with beautiful contrasts between the limestone, the marble and the coral crushed stones. A mixture of Romanesque, Arabic and Gothic styles embellished the fortress which was also decorated by sculptures, mosaic tesserae, wall paintings and glazed majolica tiles.
